Commitment - The "C" Word!

In her song entitled "Commitment", Country singer LeAnn Rimes describes commitment "as everything that goes with it..playing for keeps..going the distance."

One of the keys to living life full out or with passion is commitment. Passion and commitment go hand in hand. If you don't have a heartfelt passion for your dream then your commitment will fizzle out like a dud firecracker and if your commitment to your dream is lukewarm then in the words of Oprah "It ain't gonna happen".

These are some concepts/questions that have helped me after I have committed my self to a new career, a new action plan or community and social events. Maybe they will help you or spark additional thoughts regarding commitment.

1. Commitment means asking yourself "What am I a stand for?"

2. What is my BOLD claim publicly and inwardly?

3. What support or resources do I need to go the distance?

4. What do I need to strengthen in my self to stay committed to my dream?

5. Is my desire for this commitment for the long view or is it a flash in the pan?

6. What do I need to let go of or release to provide space for this commitment?

7. Can I remain flexible in my action plan?

8. Am I willing to have things be "good enough" so as not to go into perfection paralysis?

9. What can I incorporate into my commitment so it stays fun most of the time?

As you focus on what's important to you, your commitments will be in alignment with your passions. If they are not, try to re-negotiate your commitment. After a while, you will become more discerning when committing yourself.

Don Miguel Ruiz states it simply and powerfully in his book The Four Agreements "Be impeccably with your word. Speak with integrity. Say only what you mean. Avoid using the word to speak against yourself or gossip about others. Use the power of your word in the direction of truth and love. Your word is the power to create. Your word is the gift-the power-that comes directly from God."
