The Juicer Buying Guide

Posted by admin in Home Appliance Reviews

More and more people are discovering the health benefits of juicing and creating a raw foods lifestyle. In a nutshell, juicing allows you to extract all the vital nutrients and live enzymes directly from raw fruits, vegetables, leafy greens, wheatgrass, nuts, berries and more. The pulp and fiber is left behind and the concentrated juice is consumed so that the nutrients can be absorbed immediately by the body. Youll enjoy a greater sense of energy, vitality and health when you incorporate juicing into your lifestyle.

When shopping for a juicer, there are many issues to be considered so that you can make an informed purchase. Many people are tempted to buy a cheap juicer to start out because they are not sure they are going to like juicing and they may not be sure they will stick to a juicing regimen. My suggestion would be to visit a health foods store, spa or grocery where you can purchase fresh, raw juice from a juice bar and try some of the juices first. If you find that you like fresh fruit and vegetable juice, then youll probably be more likely to enjoy making your own juice at home.

Assuming that you are ready to begin your quest for a juicer, the first thing to know is that there are different types of juicers depending on what it is you want to juice. For example, citrus juicers are typically designed exclusively for juicing citrus fruits such as oranges, lemons, limes, grapefruits and possibly pomegranates. Some models are manual and some are electric. Some brands are constructed of plastic while others have stainless steel components. When shopping for a citrus juicer, here are some popular features to consider. Many come with a large reservoir to catch the juice and pour directly from the container. Many have a variable pulp control so that the juice can be made to be more or less pulpy. Some electric models will spin the juicing cone in forward and reverse directions in order to get the most juice from the fruit. Some come with different sizes of juicing cone to accommodate different sizes of fruit such as small limes and large grapefruit. Citrus juicers can range in price from around $20 to over $100.

Next are wheatgrass juicers. Again, they can be manual or electric. They are typically designed for juicing wheatgrass, sprouts and leafy greens. Some brands or models are plastic while others are stainless. Youll want to make sure that the blades are stainless steel. Wheatgrass juicers are not suitable for juicing other types of fruits or vegetables, except for maybe soft fruits such as grapes, blueberries, strawberries and the like. Wheatgrass juicers start at around $85 and up. There are some powerful multi-purpose juicers (described below) that will also do a great job with wheatgrass. If you think you may want to juice other things besides wheatgrass, you may want to consider stepping up to a multi-purpose juicer.

Multi-purpose power juicers are designed to juice just about everything. Most can juice a variety of fruits and vegetables, even including the skins, seeds, and stems of many fruits and vegetables. Some can even make sorbet, pate, baby food and nut butters. There are three main types of power juicers:

  • Centrifugal Juicers
  • Masticating Juicers
  • Triturating Juicers

I will describe each type of juicer in more detail.

Centrifugal Juicers Centrifugal Juicers are typically the least expensive type of power juicer. They all work on the same principle in that they have a spinning mesh basket that is designed to extract the juice from the food item. Typically, there is a tube that you feed the fruit or vegetable into. When you push food down into the tube, the food item comes in contact with the bottom of the spinning basket where it is grated up into very fine pieces or pulp. Because the basket is spinning at a fairly high RPM, the tiny grated pieces are thrown against the sides of the basket where the juice is extracted by centrifugal force. The pulp is then either contained inside the unit or expelled from the unit, depending upon the design.

Centrifugal juicers have some pros and cons. On the pro side, they are fairly inexpensive, ranging in price from as low as $40 to over $200 for high-end models. They typically work well with a variety of fruits and vegetables. However, here are some potential downsides of a centrifugal juicer. First, they typically dont do as well with leafy greens or sprouts. Second, because they are spinning at high RPM, the juice can get foamy and thus it oxidizes rapidly. When the juice oxidizes, a lot of the enzymes are destroyed, so the health benefits are diminished. Finally, some designs may be a bit harder to clean and all models require the basket to be cleaned immediately so that the mesh screen does not become clogged. When shopping for a centrifugal juicer, here are some popular features. Some models have continuous pulp ejection. This is a good feature if you are doing a lot of juicing. I will usually do enough juicing to handle 2 days worth of juice, so I need to be able to continue feeding the vegetables into the juicer. If the juicer design does not have continuous pulp ejection, then I would end up having to stop the juicer possibly several times to clean out the pulp. The size of the feeder tube should also be considered. Some models have a small feeder tube. With a small feeder tube, you have to cut up the fruits and vegetables small enough to fit into the feeder tube. Larger feeder tubes let you fit in much larger pieces. However, I have found that with a larger feeder tube, some of the smaller food pieces fall down inside the tube and never get ground up properly, so there is more waste and hence less juice. Finally, check the RPM rating of the various juicers. While a higher RPM yields a bit more juice, it can also cause more oxidation and foam. I personally would opt for a lower RPM and a smaller feed tube.

Masticating Juicers (also known as single gear juicers) Masticating juicers work a lot like our teeth. They have an auger that grinds up the fruit or vegetable into a pulp just like when we chew our food. The pulp is squeezed up against a mesh strainer so the juice is extracted while the pulp remains behind and gets ejected. Masticating juicers are more efficient than centrifugal juicers in that they yield more juice from the same amount of raw food. They also run at much lower RPMs, so the foam and oxidation is much less. Most models do well with a variety of fruits and vegetables and some can even make sorbets, nut butters, pates, baby food and more. However, some models dont work as well with leafy greens and sprouts as they do with other types of fruits and vegetables. Masticating juicers range in price from about $200 to $300. With masticating juicers, the size of the feed tube does not affect the waste as it can with centrifugal juicers, so a larger feed tube may be beneficial for juicing larger pieces of raw food.

Triturating Juicers (also known as twin gear juicers) Triturating juicers are the most versatile and also the most expensive juicers. They range in price from around $300 to $600. As the name implies, twin gear juicers have two interlocking gears that grind up the raw food. They are the most efficient juicers, and they also run at the lowest RPM so the effects of foam and oxidation are very low. They work great with practically any fruit or vegetable including wheatgrass and leafy greens and they can be used to create sorbet, pate, baby food and more. They can even grind up nuts to make nut butters such as almond butter, cashew butter, etc. When feeding raw food into the juicer, a bit more force is required to push the food items down into the twin gears than is required for a masticating juicer. Again, a larger food tube is beneficial. Clean-up is slightly more involved for a twin-gear juicer than for a single-gear juicer because the twin gears must be properly aligned when re-assembling the unit after cleaning.

To summarize, first determine what it is that you want to juice. If you just want fresh-squeezed orange juice in the morning, then a citrus juicer is fine. If you want to juice more than just citrus fruits, then take a moment to decide how much versatility you want from a juicer and decide on the price range you feel comfortable with. Once youve made those two choices, then you can narrow down your search for a specific style and model of juicer. Regardless of which juicer style you choose, you should know that the health benefits still exist. Many people have experienced such benefits as weight loss, elimination of acid reflux, increased energy and vitality, and elimination of body odor and bad breath to name a few. For more detailed information on the health benefits of a raw foods diet and lifestyle, see my article The Benefits of Raw Foods and Juicing.

Air Purifiers - Fact or Fiction?

Posted by admin in Home Appliance Reviews

What Is It?

In the last decade, air purifiers have become increasingly more popular with many segments of the population. But, why are they more popular? What exactly is their purpose? We all know that the air we breathe is becoming more and more polluted, with the air inside our homes and offices being some of the worst. Not only do we suffer from increasing pollution, many also struggle from the effects of allergens. If there is really something that can clean the air we breathe to make it safer, shouldnt we at least take a look at it? Air purifiers are sworn by, by some people and sworn at by others. They disagree over their effectiveness and their necessity.

Why Do People Use Them?

While virtually everyone agrees that we have an issue with pollution not everyone agrees with the use of purifiers. Pollution advisories and alerts are almost as common as traffic alerts during certain times of the year. One of the most common reasons that people purchase air purifiers is to help them with respiratory problems. They may have asthma, emphysema, allergies, chronic bronchitis, or any one of the many other respiratory illnesses. In order to alleviate, or at least to limit exposure to pollution or allergens these individuals get a purifier to clean the air so that they can have a better quality of life.

Are There Problems?

The problem that most people have with air purifiers is that they say they do not work and are simply a placebo to those who use them. They say that the effects that some users report are just hopeful wishes not based on facts. There have not been a lot of studies on the effectiveness of air purifiers, but it is known that they dont do much for removing mold, dust mites, pet dander, and some serious pollutants. Some ozone generators which are touted as a healthier version, actually emit ozone which is harmful to the body. These types of air purifiers should never be used.

How Are They Helpful?

Those who use purifiers regularly to help with their respiratory problems are very eager to let you know how much they have been helped They feel that their lives are better, fuller, and longer than if they had not gotten the purifier-especially those who have problems with severe allergies, etc. Whether or not air purifiers do the job, these individuals feel that they are doing better with them.

Ask Your Doctor

One thing that you can do before you purchase a purifier is to talk to your doctor and see if they think you will benefit from it. You can also research the different types of air purifiers online, or in consumer magazines to see which, if any perform the job that you would need them to.

What Else Can I Do?

For those who decide against a purifier, but would still like to make the air in their home cleaner and safer to breathe, there are things that you can do. Close all of the doors and windows and seal any leaks or cracks. Change the filter on your central air unit regularly and use the filters that are designed to trap pollutants, allergens and contaminants. Vacuum frequently, even the furniture, especially if you live in a dusty area or have pets. Use mattress covers and pillow covers that protect your bedding from dust mites. You can do simple things to make your home air cleaner.

Selection and Installation - Air Conditioning Unit

Posted by admin in Home Appliance Reviews

When choosing the correct air conditioning for your home, consider various options before making a final decision. There are permanent models, as well as portable air conditioning units that you may use to cool your home. The small window models are easier to install than a large unit, which may require the help of a professional.

If you find yourself without a central air conditioning unit, you could be miserable during the summer months. You can save yourself the misery by installing a small, and very manageable, single room air conditioning unit. Many homeowners choose to install such a unit in their bedroom, but thats completely up to you. You can choose between an air conditioning unit that is removable for your window, or you may opt for a permanent installation in your wall. A portable window unit is the easiest to install and you will be glad to know that you wont have to make any holes in your wall because most units just use a regular electrical outlet.

Before purchasing your window air conditioning unit, measure your window to ensure that you get one that fits perfectly. If possible, choose a window that is already near an outlet as this will save you from having to use extension cords.

Installation Of A Window Air Conditioning Unit

When youve purchased the perfect air conditioning unit, remove it from the box and follow the installation instructions. Your new air conditioning unit should include mounting hardware, which will need to be attached to your window. Its important to read, and follow the instructions carefully. If mounting hardware is installed incorrectly, the air conditioning unit may fall from the window and cause damage to whatever lies in its path, not to mention the certain damage of the unit itself.

Now, you are ready to place the air conditioning unit into place. Open the window high enough to allow you room to place the unit and also some extra room for your arms to move without hitting the window.

It may be a good idea to have someone help you during this step, in order to hold the window open and to allow you the convenience of an extra pair of hands should the unit be difficult to balance during installation. Your new air conditioning unit should have handles for easy manageability, but its better to be safe than sorry. Make sure that the air conditioning unit sits properly into the mounting hardware and then close the window onto the air conditioner. Pull out the extensions, which should be located on the side of the unit, in order to close the openings between the unit and each side of the window. Once everything is in place, secure each extension to the sash according to the instructions.

Before wrapping up, look for a foam strip that should be included with your air conditioning unit. This product is used to fill the air gap in the window. As you finalize the installation, make sure that the air conditioning unit is secured in position using its mounting brackets and plug in the unit once you have completed every step as outlined in the owners manual.

Its important to realize that each unit may be different and, therefore, each may have small variations in installation. By reading your owners and installation manual carefully, you will ensure a quick and easy installation. A window air conditioning unit should take 1-2 hours to install and is a recommended do-it-yourself project.

Repair Of An Installation Air Conditioning Unit

If your new air conditioning system is not functioning properly, unplug it immediately. Begin by reading through the troubleshooting section of your owners manual. If your system is under warranty, call the manufacturer, whose name and contact number should be listed in the manual. If the system is no longer covered under any kind of warranty, you may wish to call an air conditioning professional or simply replace the unit altogether. It is often more expensive to pay for repairs of an item than it would be to purchase a completely new air conditioning unit.

Vacuuming Will Never Be The Same!

Posted by admin in Home Appliance Reviews

If you have pets, you may be very acquainted with your vacuum cleaner. I know I certainly am. I have two American Eskimos and they shed all the time. The shedding of long white hair is endless, they shed all year long. So as you can imagine, I vacuum quite often. For me, a vacuum with a bag is not a practical option, I would be replacing the bag twice a week. What an expense and inconvenience that would be. So when I decided my old vacuum had all it could stand and left more dog hair on the floor than it picked up, I decided it was time to go shopping.

I knew I would need a more durable vacuum and would be just throwing my money away on a cheap model because of the work load it would have to tackle on a daily basis. I searched the web and one thing became clear. The Dyson had a line of vacuums that promised to do exactly what I needed as well as the vote of the consumers that used it and left reviews.

A little more investigating pointed me to The Dyson DC15. Why? What a machine. Of course I was initially attracted by its unique Ball. This Ball takes the place of the wheels on the bottom allowing for twists and turns like no other vacuum cleaner. It is so easy to maneuver and has 220 airwatts of suction power so it picks up the dirt the first time over. And of course, a nice large bin that I can easily empty when full without the worry of replacing a bag.

The Dyson DC15 is approved for allergy sufferers and of course it also features The Lifetime HEPA filter. The first time I vacuumed, I was amazed at the amount of dirt that was in my carpets. So, if you are in the market for a vacuum cleaner, save yourself some time and head right for The Dyson!

Posted by admin in Home Appliance Reviews

The dehumidifier is considered as an air conditioner that has coils to remove the moisture from the air. Its coils come with hot and cold and a fan that would let the air conditioner to condense the moisture created by the cold coils of the dehumidifier. It will then produce a dry air that will go through the hot coil to bring back its original temperature.

The dehumidifier is not anymore needed if there is an air conditioner available in the room. The air conditioner may do the process of dehumidifying the moisture in the room. Most households experience some problems when there is too much and too little moisture in the air.

This is the reason why many encounter problems of dry skin and itchy skin. The discomfort of having an air that is too dry may also lead to the cracking of furniture surfaces. The blocking of nasal passages would also be experienced because of the dry air produced by the moisture.

An air that is slightly wet can also cause the same problems on the skin and to the nasal passages. The continuous condensation of the moisture in windows, the expansion of molds, and the cause of rotten wood products is the effect of the dry air that is not removed. That is why it is important to have a dehumidifier in the house. To have an idea on what kind of dehumidifier to choose, here are some dehumidifier purchase costs:

1. It can be an option to have a dehumidifier that is a heat pump. These items are more complex because they are only limited. The prices of these dehumidifiers are affordable. It is advisable to buy when springtime comes where $50 to $100 of savings is offered to buyers in this season.

2. Find a dehumidifier that has a two-speed fan. These units produce less noise and gives low humidity that lessens the efficiency factor. Try to check the units before buying it. Consider the noise it produces if in case the unit will be placed near the bedrooms.

3. Buy units of dehumidifiers that have a rating of 10 L (21 U.S. pints or 2.1 imperial gallon) a day. These units may fit on those small houses that have an average moisture resistance. Their prices may range from $200 to $250 per unit. While those dehumidifiers that have 20 L (42 U.S. pints or 4.2 imperial gallons) a day rating can cost $250 to $300 per unit. These units are best for big and town houses.

4. It is not advisable to buy chemical absorbent dehumidifiers. These units are only suitable for places that have hot and weather climates.

5. Look for the (EF) or the Efficiency Factor of the unit. This is the guide to know the amount of the dehumidifiers operation cost. There are provided information on the brochure of the unit where the operators manual can give the instruction on how to get the EF. There is also a label that will indicate the EF if there are no manuals available on the brochure. The label can be found at the back of the water collection bucket section.

This information on dehumidifiers may help buyers how to choose the right unit for their home. Always check the manufacturers reputation on selling the said product. Always look for the quality of the unit and ask for the guarantees and warranties of the unit.

Small Appliance Parts

Posted by admin in Home Appliance Reviews

If you really think about it, its the small appliance parts that make your everyday life so much easier. You wake up in the morning and you use an oven toaster those are small appliance parts working right there. In the late afternoon in the office, you pour yourself some coffee from the coffeemaker those are small appliance parts working again.

Indeed, most of our day is spent depending on small appliance wonders, and its only right that we learn to use them safely and that we prolong their useful lives by taking care of them. Below are some useful tips.

Follow safety instructions. Never forget to read the manufacturers handbook, because it contains pertinent information about the care and use of your small appliance and its parts. Be extra careful with small kitchen appliances not all of them can get wet. Never plunge small kitchen appliances in dishwasher water, for example, unless the handbook tells you that its safe. Negligence or simple actions like this can hurt you.

Be careful where you plug appliances. Make it a habit to plug your small appliances directly into wall outlets whenever you can. If you have to use extension cords, read the cords electrical rating first; it should be able to handle wattage that is either at least equal to or more than your small appliances wattage. Overloading can cause your small appliance parts to ignite and possibly cause a fire. Also, remember to turn your small appliance off before you unplug it. Never attempt to pull out the plug by pulling the cord; instead, firmly hold the plug and then disconnect.

Clean small appliances with proper chemicals. You can possibly damage small appliance parts if you clean them incorrectly or use the wrong chemical, so again, refer to your manufacturers manual. Some nonstick surfaces can be cleaned with off-the-rack cleaners, but be careful not to do this too often, as it may cause surface chipping or fading.

Safety Precautions For Stove Use

Posted by admin in Home Appliance Reviews

Your stove is possibly one of the most useful appliances in your home, but it can also be the most dangerous if you arent careful. Its something that most people dont think about much, but your stove can be the scene of many accidents. It pays to be cautious whenever you use your stove to avoid injuries and possible problems.

General Safety Precautions

Whether you have a gas, wood or electric stove, there are certain safety tips that should always be followed to keep your family safe.

When cooking, turn the pots so the handles dont stick out over the edge of the stove where small children can grab them and pull boiling hot food on top of themselves.

Always keep a fire extinguisher handy near the stove, even if there is a sink nearby, grease fires will just spread if you throw water on them, so its better to use an extinguisher.

Only let children cook under adult supervision.

Use oven mitts and potholders to handle hot pans and pots to prevent burns from the high temperature metals.

Dont use metal spoons to stir food on the stove and then leave them in the pot. They heat up quickly and can burn your hand the next time you touch them.

Avoid using loose, flowing clothing or leaving dish towels near hot burners, since these can catch fire.

Gas Stoves

For obvious reasons, gas stoves need extra safety precautions. You want to make sure that there are no gas leaks, so anytime you hear a hissing or smell gas and cant tell where it is coming from, turn off your gas at the source, open all windows and exit the house. Call the fire department to check it out. Here are some other things to keep in mind with gas stoves.

If your stove doesnt have a pilot light, be sure to light it immediately after turning the gas on. You can cause an explosion by waiting more than a second or two. Even minor gas explosions can seriously injure someone who is close to the stove at the time.

Check regularly for gas leaks and if you notice any stove parts getting rusty or old, be sure to replace them.

Gas tends to heat very quickly, so watch your pots carefully to make sure you dont end up with soups boiling over or starting a fire in a pan. If you do end up with a fire, use your fire extinguisher, dont throw water on the flames.

Electric Stoves

Electric stoves are the staple of most kitchens. They heat evenly with coils and electricity tends to be more stable than gas as far as safety goes. However, there are still some precautions specific to electrical stoves.

Clean under the burners regularly to prevent fires. Extra bits of food that fall under the burner into the tray can catch fire if the burner is hot enough.

Since pots are placed directly onto the burner, its pretty easy to accidentally touch the hot element. Be careful when reaching across the stove, even if its turned off, since the element can store heat for a while afterwards.

Take care and use protective equipment to put things in the oven. Electric stoves usually have elements at the top of the oven and this can really be a danger when you reach far into the preheated oven.

Stoves are very useful and can be a great appliance to have, but they do need to be treated with care in order to avoid injury. Cook carefully and follow the safety precautions listed above to get the best, safest use out of your stove.

When cooking with a stove, be sure to exercise safety precautions to prevent against a possible accident. Extra care and awareness will help guard against any potential mishaps.
