The Juicer Buying Guide

Posted by admin in Home Appliance Reviews

More and more people are discovering the health benefits of juicing and creating a raw foods lifestyle. In a nutshell, juicing allows you to extract all the vital nutrients and live enzymes directly from raw fruits, vegetables, leafy greens, wheatgrass, nuts, berries and more. The pulp and fiber is left behind and the concentrated juice is consumed so that the nutrients can be absorbed immediately by the body. Youll enjoy a greater sense of energy, vitality and health when you incorporate juicing into your lifestyle.

When shopping for a juicer, there are many issues to be considered so that you can make an informed purchase. Many people are tempted to buy a cheap juicer to start out because they are not sure they are going to like juicing and they may not be sure they will stick to a juicing regimen. My suggestion would be to visit a health foods store, spa or grocery where you can purchase fresh, raw juice from a juice bar and try some of the juices first. If you find that you like fresh fruit and vegetable juice, then youll probably be more likely to enjoy making your own juice at home.

Assuming that you are ready to begin your quest for a juicer, the first thing to know is that there are different types of juicers depending on what it is you want to juice. For example, citrus juicers are typically designed exclusively for juicing citrus fruits such as oranges, lemons, limes, grapefruits and possibly pomegranates. Some models are manual and some are electric. Some brands are constructed of plastic while others have stainless steel components. When shopping for a citrus juicer, here are some popular features to consider. Many come with a large reservoir to catch the juice and pour directly from the container. Many have a variable pulp control so that the juice can be made to be more or less pulpy. Some electric models will spin the juicing cone in forward and reverse directions in order to get the most juice from the fruit. Some come with different sizes of juicing cone to accommodate different sizes of fruit such as small limes and large grapefruit. Citrus juicers can range in price from around $20 to over $100.

Next are wheatgrass juicers. Again, they can be manual or electric. They are typically designed for juicing wheatgrass, sprouts and leafy greens. Some brands or models are plastic while others are stainless. Youll want to make sure that the blades are stainless steel. Wheatgrass juicers are not suitable for juicing other types of fruits or vegetables, except for maybe soft fruits such as grapes, blueberries, strawberries and the like. Wheatgrass juicers start at around $85 and up. There are some powerful multi-purpose juicers (described below) that will also do a great job with wheatgrass. If you think you may want to juice other things besides wheatgrass, you may want to consider stepping up to a multi-purpose juicer.

Multi-purpose power juicers are designed to juice just about everything. Most can juice a variety of fruits and vegetables, even including the skins, seeds, and stems of many fruits and vegetables. Some can even make sorbet, pate, baby food and nut butters. There are three main types of power juicers:

  • Centrifugal Juicers
  • Masticating Juicers
  • Triturating Juicers

I will describe each type of juicer in more detail.

Centrifugal Juicers Centrifugal Juicers are typically the least expensive type of power juicer. They all work on the same principle in that they have a spinning mesh basket that is designed to extract the juice from the food item. Typically, there is a tube that you feed the fruit or vegetable into. When you push food down into the tube, the food item comes in contact with the bottom of the spinning basket where it is grated up into very fine pieces or pulp. Because the basket is spinning at a fairly high RPM, the tiny grated pieces are thrown against the sides of the basket where the juice is extracted by centrifugal force. The pulp is then either contained inside the unit or expelled from the unit, depending upon the design.

Centrifugal juicers have some pros and cons. On the pro side, they are fairly inexpensive, ranging in price from as low as $40 to over $200 for high-end models. They typically work well with a variety of fruits and vegetables. However, here are some potential downsides of a centrifugal juicer. First, they typically dont do as well with leafy greens or sprouts. Second, because they are spinning at high RPM, the juice can get foamy and thus it oxidizes rapidly. When the juice oxidizes, a lot of the enzymes are destroyed, so the health benefits are diminished. Finally, some designs may be a bit harder to clean and all models require the basket to be cleaned immediately so that the mesh screen does not become clogged. When shopping for a centrifugal juicer, here are some popular features. Some models have continuous pulp ejection. This is a good feature if you are doing a lot of juicing. I will usually do enough juicing to handle 2 days worth of juice, so I need to be able to continue feeding the vegetables into the juicer. If the juicer design does not have continuous pulp ejection, then I would end up having to stop the juicer possibly several times to clean out the pulp. The size of the feeder tube should also be considered. Some models have a small feeder tube. With a small feeder tube, you have to cut up the fruits and vegetables small enough to fit into the feeder tube. Larger feeder tubes let you fit in much larger pieces. However, I have found that with a larger feeder tube, some of the smaller food pieces fall down inside the tube and never get ground up properly, so there is more waste and hence less juice. Finally, check the RPM rating of the various juicers. While a higher RPM yields a bit more juice, it can also cause more oxidation and foam. I personally would opt for a lower RPM and a smaller feed tube.

Masticating Juicers (also known as single gear juicers) Masticating juicers work a lot like our teeth. They have an auger that grinds up the fruit or vegetable into a pulp just like when we chew our food. The pulp is squeezed up against a mesh strainer so the juice is extracted while the pulp remains behind and gets ejected. Masticating juicers are more efficient than centrifugal juicers in that they yield more juice from the same amount of raw food. They also run at much lower RPMs, so the foam and oxidation is much less. Most models do well with a variety of fruits and vegetables and some can even make sorbets, nut butters, pates, baby food and more. However, some models dont work as well with leafy greens and sprouts as they do with other types of fruits and vegetables. Masticating juicers range in price from about $200 to $300. With masticating juicers, the size of the feed tube does not affect the waste as it can with centrifugal juicers, so a larger feed tube may be beneficial for juicing larger pieces of raw food.

Triturating Juicers (also known as twin gear juicers) Triturating juicers are the most versatile and also the most expensive juicers. They range in price from around $300 to $600. As the name implies, twin gear juicers have two interlocking gears that grind up the raw food. They are the most efficient juicers, and they also run at the lowest RPM so the effects of foam and oxidation are very low. They work great with practically any fruit or vegetable including wheatgrass and leafy greens and they can be used to create sorbet, pate, baby food and more. They can even grind up nuts to make nut butters such as almond butter, cashew butter, etc. When feeding raw food into the juicer, a bit more force is required to push the food items down into the twin gears than is required for a masticating juicer. Again, a larger food tube is beneficial. Clean-up is slightly more involved for a twin-gear juicer than for a single-gear juicer because the twin gears must be properly aligned when re-assembling the unit after cleaning.

To summarize, first determine what it is that you want to juice. If you just want fresh-squeezed orange juice in the morning, then a citrus juicer is fine. If you want to juice more than just citrus fruits, then take a moment to decide how much versatility you want from a juicer and decide on the price range you feel comfortable with. Once youve made those two choices, then you can narrow down your search for a specific style and model of juicer. Regardless of which juicer style you choose, you should know that the health benefits still exist. Many people have experienced such benefits as weight loss, elimination of acid reflux, increased energy and vitality, and elimination of body odor and bad breath to name a few. For more detailed information on the health benefits of a raw foods diet and lifestyle, see my article The Benefits of Raw Foods and Juicing.

Diabetes Information for Diabetics

Posted by admin in Diabetes Treatment

According to the American Diabetes Association, approximately 7% of the US population or almost 21 million men, women, and children have diabetes. Diabetes is diagnosed when the body has an inability to utilize insulin or make insulin properly. Insulin is a hormone that works with the pancreas to allow the cells in the body to receive glucose controlling sugar levels in the body.

Fasting Glucose tests, Random Glucose Tests, and Oral Glucose Tolerance tests are used to diagnose diabetes. Diabetes is present if a fasting test (no food for 8 hours) reveals a level of 126mg/dl or higher or if a blood test taken 2-hours after a meal is 200 mg/dl (milligrams/deciliter). There are 4 types of diabetes including:

  • Pre-Diabetes is a condition occurring before the onset of glucose levels adequate for diagnosis of type 1 or type 2 Diabetes.
  • Type I Diabetes occurs when the body has an inability to produce insulin and is most commonly diagnosed in childhood.
  • Type II Diabetes occurs when the body produces insulin but is unable to utilize it or produce it in adequate amounts. This is the most common form in adults.
  • Gestational Diabetes occurs in women who are pregnant. According to the American Diabetes Association approximately 4% of women are diagnosed during pregnancy.

Diabetes has both a genetic factor and an environmental factor. Genetic predisposition (heredity) is obvious and diet and exercise also play key roles. Many people who are diagnosed with Pre-Diabetes can avoid diabetes by adjusting their diet and exercise. Type II Diabetes has a greater heritability factor than Type I.

The cells of your body need sugar for energy. Think of glucose as your bodies batteries for your body. The hormone insulin is necessary for the cells to absorb and utilize this energy. The insulin is necessary for the absorption of glucose.

If you suspect that you may have diabetes, seek help from your health care provider. There are also many awareness events and health events that offer screenings. Typically, a health provider will use a glycosylated hemoglobin or hemoglobin A1c test that will evaluate an average reading for the last 4 months. This is usually the most reliable of all tests and is commonly used for diagnosis.

Air Purifiers - Fact or Fiction?

Posted by admin in Home Appliance Reviews

What Is It?

In the last decade, air purifiers have become increasingly more popular with many segments of the population. But, why are they more popular? What exactly is their purpose? We all know that the air we breathe is becoming more and more polluted, with the air inside our homes and offices being some of the worst. Not only do we suffer from increasing pollution, many also struggle from the effects of allergens. If there is really something that can clean the air we breathe to make it safer, shouldnt we at least take a look at it? Air purifiers are sworn by, by some people and sworn at by others. They disagree over their effectiveness and their necessity.

Why Do People Use Them?

While virtually everyone agrees that we have an issue with pollution not everyone agrees with the use of purifiers. Pollution advisories and alerts are almost as common as traffic alerts during certain times of the year. One of the most common reasons that people purchase air purifiers is to help them with respiratory problems. They may have asthma, emphysema, allergies, chronic bronchitis, or any one of the many other respiratory illnesses. In order to alleviate, or at least to limit exposure to pollution or allergens these individuals get a purifier to clean the air so that they can have a better quality of life.

Are There Problems?

The problem that most people have with air purifiers is that they say they do not work and are simply a placebo to those who use them. They say that the effects that some users report are just hopeful wishes not based on facts. There have not been a lot of studies on the effectiveness of air purifiers, but it is known that they dont do much for removing mold, dust mites, pet dander, and some serious pollutants. Some ozone generators which are touted as a healthier version, actually emit ozone which is harmful to the body. These types of air purifiers should never be used.

How Are They Helpful?

Those who use purifiers regularly to help with their respiratory problems are very eager to let you know how much they have been helped They feel that their lives are better, fuller, and longer than if they had not gotten the purifier-especially those who have problems with severe allergies, etc. Whether or not air purifiers do the job, these individuals feel that they are doing better with them.

Ask Your Doctor

One thing that you can do before you purchase a purifier is to talk to your doctor and see if they think you will benefit from it. You can also research the different types of air purifiers online, or in consumer magazines to see which, if any perform the job that you would need them to.

What Else Can I Do?

For those who decide against a purifier, but would still like to make the air in their home cleaner and safer to breathe, there are things that you can do. Close all of the doors and windows and seal any leaks or cracks. Change the filter on your central air unit regularly and use the filters that are designed to trap pollutants, allergens and contaminants. Vacuum frequently, even the furniture, especially if you live in a dusty area or have pets. Use mattress covers and pillow covers that protect your bedding from dust mites. You can do simple things to make your home air cleaner.

Diabetes - What You Need To Know

Posted by admin in Diabetes Treatment

If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with diabetes, the first thing you should do is to find out as much information about the disease as possible. Although there is no cure for diabetes, proper treatment and lifestyle choices can make it easy to live with diabetes and allow someone with this condition to live a long, full life.

Only a doctor can diagnose your diabetes. It is often diagnosed when someone feels poorly. They might even faint or feel very sick for a long period of time. There might be frequent visits to the bathroom and excessive thirst. Some people develop a cold and clammy feeling and might think that they are having a heart attack. A blood test will indicate a problem with the glucose levels and the doctor will want to do more tests. Extensive blood work is needed in order to confirm a diagnosis of diabetes.

Diabetes Type II has reached epidemic proportions in the United States. The disease is linked to obesity and diets rich in simple carbohydrates. It can also be an inherited condition. Most diabetics have a first degree relative with the disease. Age also plays a factor and many people are diagnosed with diabetes after the age of 65.

With diabetes type II, the body does not produce enough insulin needed to break down glucose. It remains in the blood system and causes the kidneys to work hard to eliminate the waste. If untreated, the kidneys will eventually fail.

It is important to treat diabetes as soon as you are diagnosed. Depending on your history and blood sugar levels, the doctor will prescribe either oral medication or insulin. Many diabetics dislike taking insulin, although this is the most effective treatment for the disease. Insulin pumps can provide the body with insulin without having to take a shot every day.

There are various medications available to treat diabetes and the doctor will usually prescribe a combination of pills. The dosage may need to be adjusted until the blood glucose levels are under control. It is important to monitor the blood glucose levels at all times, but especially when you are first diagnosed so that you can make sure you are on the proper dosage of medication.

Once your blood glucose levels are under control, you will have to continue to monitor these levels a few times a day. Most diabetics test their blood sugars at least three times a day. This requires a meter, a lancet pen, lancets and testing strips. Supplies can be costly, but most insurance companies will cover some of the costs. There are some places online that will bill your insurance company directly and send you the supplies at a discount, even if you have Medicare. Once you understand the different diabetic supplies that you need, it is a good idea to shop around for the best price on supplies.

You will have to see the doctor a few times a year during the first year to make sure that your blood sugar levels are under control. He or she will want to do blood tests. The big mistake that most diabetics make is that they refuse to acknowledge the disease and do not see their doctor regularly. If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with diabetes, make sure that regular visits to the physician are scheduled.

Diabetes can be a scary diagnosis, but this is a disease that you can live with and control, as long as you follow the advice of your doctor.

Gestational Diabetes and Pregnancy

Posted by admin in Diabetes Treatment

There are many potential problems involved with pregnancy for both the mother and the child. And, unfortunately some can be serious. Annually, some four percent of American women who become pregnant will be diagnosed with gestational diabetes. GD comes about during the late stages of a pregnancy and may be a somewhat frightening diagnosis for the parents to be.

Exactly what triggers gestational diabetes is, for the most part, still a mystery, while there is some connection to pregnancy hormones and the placenta. Whenever your body is incapable of making or utilizing all the insulin it demands, glucose staying in the blood sooner or later progresses to abnormally high levels.

Luckily, gestational diabetes does not usually lead to birth defects or abnormalities. But, it still may cause problems for the infant. When the mother has gestational diabetes during her pregnancy the baby tends to be larger and as a result may suffer shoulder injuries during the delivery. They also may have jaundice, low glucose levels and higher insulin levels than average, in addition to respiration problems. It is generally believed that infants born with high insulin levels are more prone to have problems with obesity.

Gestational diabetes could also be a source of health issues for the mother, as delivering a big baby can be problematic and, in numerous cases, leads to having a Caesarian section. Also, gestational diabetes increases the chance of getting type 2 diabetes somewhere down the road.

The method of keeping gestational diabetes in check is the same as all forms of the disease. Diet modification, physical exercise, and medication. With this form of the disease, treatment is commonly started as soon as the mother is diagnosed. Diet plans are implemented immediately, which include all of the food groups, with emphasis on whole grains and vegetables to assist in the control of blood sugar.

Additionally, a fitness plan of moderate exercise is suggested to assist in controlling gestational diabetes. Exercise conditions the body to burn up the excess glucose without the necessity of additional insulin. The level of physical exertion suggested is based on the mothers exercise habits prior to becoming pregnant because too much of an increase could be dangerous.

Knowing your blood sugar level assists in treating high or low blood sugar before it becomes a problem. It also helps in determining how food and exercise affect your blood sugar level and, if you take insulin, the amount needed.

Women who have gestational diabetes need to know their blood sugar levels at all times. Luckily, this can be known at anytime by utilizing a home blood sugar meter. With this handy device they can know in just a minute or two, what their blood sugar level is.

If a woman has GD or gestational diabetes in one pregnancy there is a good chance that she will have it again with any future ones. But, gestational diabetes typically disappears within a few weeks of the delivery. It is important to remember though that many develop type 1 or type 2 diabetes later on in life.

All about the Blogs

Posted by admin in Create A Blog

First came the web, then the web log, the space was removed and it became weblog, we was removed and it became a blog. Sources disagree on when the term was first coined. Some say blogging first appeared in 1995, while others credit John Bayer with first using the term in 1997. Either way, blogging has become a popular pastime and blogs are a common part of the internet community. Some maintain that web logs are personal diaries or journals of individuals and blogs are topic specific sites. The term is commonly used to describe both personal diaries and topic specific sites.

Types of Blogs

In the beginning, blogs were straight text. Now most contain text and images. Topic specific blogs include everything from sports and politics to history and literature. There are photoblogs on which individuals post photographs of various things. There are photoblog discussion sites which are mostly plain text blogs where people discuss their own photoblogs and the photoblogs of others. There is photoblogging news which again consists of mostly plain text and people discuss different photoblogs that are out there and what they have to offer. Videoblogging is relatively new and is basically another form of self-_expression. There are blogs about videoblogging on which groups and individuals discuss things like the best digital video format. There are MP3 blogs which are very popular. These offer musical selections for listening and downloading pleasure.

Blog Hosting Services

MySpace is a service that allows users to use there weblog (blog) application software, either free or for a fee. MSN has a similar service. Usually basic services are free and customers pay extra for additional services. Individual users have their own web page or pages consisting of journal blogs, photos, or videos if desired as well as various background selections. Depending on a users knowledge of HTML text and graphics, these sites can be very simple or very complex, but all are as unique as the individuals that design them. MySpace has gotten some bad press lately because site users can browse profiles, in order to meet people in real life. This may be how some people choose to use the site, but is not how or why the site was designed to be used.

Why we blog

Blogging of any type is basically a form of self-_expression or idea exchange. It is not a dating service. People use them to keep in touch with their families and friends. Let everyone know what is going on in their life. They share photos from across the miles and across the years. People sometimes connect with people from other countries and sometimes reconnect with people who moved away in grade school. Yes, the sites have gotten some bad press and parental warnings, but doesnt everything new. If memory serves, it used to be chat rooms that were full of perverts waiting for the chance to take advantage of unsuspecting innocents. Now they blame it on the blogs.

Coffee Or Tea Which One Will It Be

Posted by admin in Green Coffee

For a coffee lover like me.I sometimes like a good cup of tea.

In this busy world there is nothing finer than taking time out from a busy schedule to enjoy a quiet cuppa by ones self. Sitting back with a steaming espresso in hand is like entering an oasis of sanity in the middle of a hectic day.

But then again I do relish sharing a brew with one or more friends whether it is when they come to visit me at home, or if we all meet up at a coffee house.

Coffee and tea are an indispensable social tradition the world over. I know I am grossly insulted if someone comes to my house and turns down my offer of a cup of the good brew

However, if it is summer and the temperature is running a little high many people prefer iced coffee or tea to cool them down rather than to warm them up. Now days, there are also some really enticing gourmet blends on the market which include a variety of fruit or nut flavors that add something special to any occasion.

Both coffee and tea are stimulants which contain caffeine. However if you are looking to wind down instead of be up-lifted, you can opt for decaffeinated coffee where the beans undergo a process to have the caffeine content removed. The only draw back is the decaffeination process tends to take some of the flavor with it, so it is best to buy a premium grade of coffee when you want the no kick or light variety.

Some people cant drink coffee or tea at all because it affects their blood pressure. More commonly people wont touch coffee because it interferes with their sleep patterns. Naturally enough if you do have trouble sleeping then it would be best not to have a full strength brew just before you go to bed. Maybe an herbal tea would be a better choice.

Alternately, you may like to switch to a caffeine-free version of your favorite brew at bed time. Of course if you want a bit more buck, then you can always try one of those flavored stirrers that are becoming more and more popular and readily available in supermarkets everywhere these days.

Coffee and tea are the caffeine twins (although coffee is the one with all the hitting power); however it is quite ironic that both are associated with comfort and relaxation when really the opposite is in fact the case. If you are really looking to wind down beer or wine are probably better depressants.

We all have our different daily rituals when it comes to drinking coffee or tea.

First thing in the morning I prefer the jolt of a good espresso. The aroma is as stimulating as the coffee itself. It might seem strange but at lunch time I enjoy a cup of tea, something like English breakfast tea does it for me at this time of the day.

Lately with the arrival of warmer weather I have taken to drinking Chai tea. The spicy taste is quite refreshing and I like it either black or with a dash of milk. By the close of day I really like to finish off with a top quality gourmet blend coffee and possibly a glass of port or a small brandy on the side.

Enjoy!
